The Question I'm Tired of Answering

“What watch should I buy as my first nice watch?”

I get this question weekly. And I’ve stopped giving direct answers.

Not because I don’t have opinions. I have too many opinions. But the question reveals a misunderstanding about what makes a watch valuable.

The “best” first watch depends entirely on you. Your wrist size. Your budget. Your style. Whether you work in an office or on a construction site. Whether you care about movements or just want something that looks good.

A Seiko Presage is perfect for someone. A Tudor Black Bay is perfect for someone else. A €50 Casio is perfect for plenty of people.

Asking strangers what to buy is asking them to project their preferences onto your life.

My actual advice: try things on. Visit a store. Handle different sizes and styles. See what makes your eyes light up.

The watch that excites you is the right first watch. Even if it’s “not what people recommend.”

Nobody else has to wear it on your wrist.

11 PM. Can’t sleep. Open Chrono24. This is how mistakes happen. Found a Zenith El Primero from 1992 with tritium dial. Original bracelet. Service history. €4,200. That’s a fair price. Maybe even a good price. The seller has positive reviews. The photos look legitimate.

Spotted a 5513 in the Wild Today

Buying coffee this morning. The barista had a Submariner 5513 on her wrist. No date, matte dial, faded bezel insert. Looked like a 1970s example. I asked about it. Her grandfather bought it new in 1974. Wore it every day for 40 years. Now she wears it every day.
