Seiko just announced three limited edition pieces to mark 60 years since their first diver. The original 62MAS from 1965 started something big. Six decades later, Seiko dominates the affordable dive watch market.
The Releases #
Three watches, three price points, three different takes on the anniversary theme.
SLA083 - The Flagship
Based on the 1975 Professional Diver (the “Grandfather Tuna”). This one uses the 8L35 automatic movement - Seiko’s high-end caliber with 50-hour power reserve. 300m water resistance in a 44mm monoblock case.
Limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide. Price sits around €4,800. That’s serious money for a Seiko, but the 8L35 delivers serious performance.
SPB457 and SPB459 - The Accessible Pair
Both use the 6R35 movement with 70-hour power reserve. 42mm cases with 200m water resistance. One comes in black, one in navy blue with gradient dial.
Limited to 6,000 pieces each. Price around €1,400. Much more reasonable for collectors who want the anniversary connection without the premium.
The 62MAS Legacy #
The 1965 original was revolutionary for its time. Japan’s first dive watch with genuine depth capability. It proved that the Swiss didn’t have monopoly on serious tool watches.
Seiko has referenced this design countless times since. The SPB14x “Baby 62MAS” series. The SLA017 reissue. Now these anniversary pieces.
Worth It? #
The 6R35 models at €1,400 represent decent value if you connect with the anniversary story. The movement is proven, the finishing is good for the price, and 6,000 pieces means they won’t be impossible to find.
The 8L35 flagship is harder to justify. €4,800 puts you in competition with plenty of Swiss options. You’re paying for the limited run and the movement pedigree.
But watch collecting isn’t about pure value. If the 60-year milestone means something to you, these capture it well.
Available from June 2025 at Seiko boutiques and authorized retailers.
